The mountainous region of Aigialia

The SLOPES of AIGION constitute about half the northern part of Peloponnese. Its seaside part extends from Aigeira – Akrata to Loggos – Lampiri. The viticultural region grows in the low slopes of this axis and goes up towards the peaks of the big mountains surrounding it: Helmos, Panachaikon and their offshoots. Many rivers stream down these mountains, thus forming separate slopes and plateaus. Vouraikos River is the most famous amongst them, because, in its passing, it creates beautiful gorges and geological formations (Natura). The cog railway travels along this gorge, passes through the Aigion region and reaches Kalavrita.

The slopes of Aigion are uniquely beautiful, as they are overgrown landscapes-balconies over the Corinthian Gulf. At the same time, they constitute one of the most interesting vinicultural regions in the world (Stavroula Kourakou, honorary chairwoman of the O.I.V.) for the following reasons:

  • They are one of the very few north-facing regions in Greece (because of the Corinthian Gulf fault).
  • The soil is fertile, due to the old geological deposits, and it is well drained because of its inclination.
  • The altitude of the vineyards (500 – 1050 m.) is a determinant for the quality of our products.
  • Behind them, towards the South, the aforementioned mountains provide a secure barrier for the hot winds coming from the south (Africa) during the summer months.
  • The vineyards benefit from the high rainfalls of western Greece, as from the climate of the Corinthian Gulf (referred in the old nautical charts as an attraction pole for low barometric pressure).
  • The region’s inhabitants have developed a quality discipline for the long-ranged cultivation of the black grapes that lie in the sun and thus presuppose vigorous fruits and small yields.

For the same reasons, the black grapes of the region have the reputation (and the honour) of being the best raisins in the world, PAO Vostizza, which is the old name of the city of Aigion.

Also, for these reasons, the application of organic grape culturing principles is easy and very common.

The different vineyards of Aigion have different mesoclimates, different compositions (both chemical and granulometric) of the soil and they produce wines that differ from each other in character and delicacy. However, every wine has an adequate and sharp acidity, complex fruit aromas with a steady background of citrus fruits, as well as a mineral character in taste, features that compose their special identity.
